Musical Director Ian Walshaw

Cold Ash Brass are delighted top welcome Ian to the post of Musical Director, we are excited to see where we go together in this new musical partnership!

Ian comes from Gloucestershire and started playing cornet at the age of 9, following in the footsteps of his brass-playing family. 

 

Whilst studying music at The University of Hull, Ian began his conducting career, taking the university brass band and wind band. He conducted British Airways Band from 2022-2025 and has conducted Richmond Brass Band since 2023. He holds a DipABRSM with Distinction in Music Direction (Military Band).

 

Ian is currently Principal Euphonium of the Band of the Irish Guards, based in London. He was honoured to perform at the Platinum Jubilee celebrations and State Funeral of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and at the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. During his career in British Army Music he has travelled to Cyprus, Gibraltar, Estonia, Lithuania, Andorra, Germany, The Netherlands, France and The Falkland Islands.

 

Ian has also enjoyed the experience of playing baritone and euphonium in the Championship Section with Yorkshire Imperial Band, Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band and Lydbrook Band.

 

Ian accepted the position of Musical Director at Cold Ash Brass in May 2025 and looks forward to an exciting and fulfilling musical partnership with the band.
